Brankstone Cooper Vintage Butcher Chopping Block.
The history of this block is not entirely clear, but it was removed from a Buy-Lo store near Portsmouth, Va sometime around 1990. Its path from manufacture in Memphis, Tn to Virginia is unknown.
The surface and sides have been completely stripped of all contaminants and sealing waxes, sterilized and refinished with food grade mineral oil. The underside and legs are cleaned but not refinished. Wood appears to be maple.
Absent on this block are the knife racks that likely adorned each end. They could fairly easily be crafted to match. One leg shows signs of a bored employee hacking at it. See photo.
Legs are removable (3in round insert roughly 4in deep). Overall, the block is extremely heavy and may weigh close to 300lbs. It is a beautiful relic of a bygone era, retains visible knife marks in its surface, and is ready for either years of continued use or elegant display.
